IDMS-N200

IDMS-N200-200pxResonance Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS)  is a highly sensitive and accurate method for the determination of the elastic constants of a solid by measurement of its free-vibration resonance frequencies. The IDMS-N200 is a fully digital measurement and data processing system for RUS measurements, integrating the most advanced numerical technologies.

SenserFixture-300ptThe IDMS-N200 uses a three-point support as sample holder. This kind of support allows a constraint-free sample placement, which is essential for obtaining free-vibration resonance frequencies of the sample itself.

The tripod consists of two independent piezo-electric pinducers for vibration excitation and detection. One pinducer generates a burst-wave sinusoidal vibration of a given frequency and transmits it to the sample. The other pinducer detects the oscillation amplitude at the same frequency. The detection by the receiving pinducer might either be done simultaneously with the excitation, or might be started only after the end of the excitation burst wave.

The third pin might either be a simple support pin, or optionally might integrate a thermocouple for simultaneous temperature measurement on the sample.

By sweeping the excitation/detection frequency the sample’s free-vibration resonance spectrum will be obtained, and its resonance frequencies can be easily identified as the peaks of this spectrum. These resonance frequencies are directly related to the sample’s elastic constants.

The design of the tripod allows coupling of the ultrasonic vibration energy between the pinducers and the sample without the use of any acoustic couplant (like gel or water), and without any external force applied to the sample. It therefore allows ideal free oscillation of the sample.

In addition to its primary use as a pulser/receiver for RUS measurements, the IDMS-N200 can be configured to serve as a spectrum analyzer, for fast and simple analysis of the frequency composition of an unknown signal within its frequency range.
